PORTLAND Hockey Club’s division three men’s side picked up a strong win over West at Portland’s Nelson Park on Saturday, dominating from the outset to win 4-1.
Portland called up two players from division three for the match, seeing the side shuffle its line up and consequently take a few minutes to settle.
It was talented young player Lachie Donehue who opened the scoring for Portland 15 minutes into the game when he converted from a short corner variation with a flick into the top of the net.
West produced a handful of counterattacks in the next few minutes via long flicks out of defence, however the experienced backline led by Mick Barnes and Andy Thomas easily contained these threats.
Dayton Thomas gave Portland a second goal before half time when he executed a difficult squeeze shot on the grass to baffle everyone in the goal mouth, seeing the home side leading 2-0 at the break.
