THE Hamilton Raiders secured a late victory on Sunday to defeat the Merri Stingrays 5-4 in their first home game of the season.
Coming off the back of a 10-2 win at Colac a week earlier, the Raiders went into the match confident they could reduce the one point deficit between themselves and the third placed Stingrays.
Opening the scoring early, Raiders captain Malcolm Grimmer nodded in a looping header from the edge of the area when Anthony Hilsdon sent in a long ball from deep inside his own half.
Unable to hold onto the lead, the Raiders conceded shortly after when midfielder Pete Hodkinson brought down the opposition inside the area, conceding a penalty and receiving a yellow card in the process.
The Stingrays stepped up and hit a low shot into the bottom left corner to make the score 1-1.
