HEYWOOD artist Tom Day will have his artwork showcased on one of Australia’s biggest stages next weekend when Essendon takes on Richmond in the AFL’s annual Dreamtime at the G match.
Day won a national competition to design a special one-off Essendon Football Club jumper for the match in recognition of the 10th anniversary of the Long Walk.
Day, who has previously designed jumpers both for community sides competing at carnivals and for an Indigenous Recognition Match between Heywood and Portland, was encouraged to enter the competition last July by good friend Jason Walker, who was working with the Bombers at the time.
“Jase (Walker), who was working for Essendon at the time gave me the heads up, asked if I was interested and really encouraged me to have a crack at it,” Day said.
“I sent some preliminary designs to Essendon on what my thoughts were and they seemed pretty keen and encouraged me to put something in.
“Then I got busy and I actually didn’t put in a design until the night it needed to be done.
