A NEW era in language is about to start at Koori playgroups in Portland and Heywood later this year.
Playgroup leaders and parents will start teaching children to the age of five years the basics in south-west Aboriginal language.
Children will start learning the spoken and written forms to describe body parts, animals, counting and greetings as part of the re-teaching and re-learning of Aboriginal culture in the south-west.
The pilot programs, which have been running at the Heywood and DistrictSecondaryCollege and the HeywoodConsolidated School for the past few years with the assistance of Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages specialist Joel Wright, were extended recently to include the region’s playgroup network.
