THE Winter Solstice Fun run is only weeks away, and students from the surrounding primary schools are preparing to take part in the annual event.
Portland Primary School teacher Michael Keem and 18 dedicated students have started their training regime, with the help of Craig Keenan, a parent of one of the students and a member of the Portland Runners Club.
Mr Keem said that the students have started a month-long training program to build up some strength and technique before the Fun Run on June 22.
“They have a program to complete at home and we’ll be doing stuff at school too some of them will need to show some commitment and work through the program while it will come more naturally to others,” noted Mr Keem.
“We’re aiming to teach each student the importance of pacing themselves as young runners tend to sprint hard as they can at the start of the race, and then walk a section.
