AN alarming number of recreational boat owners are ignoring basic safety measures in waters off Portland.
Victoria Water Police came to Portland on the weekend and found dozens of boat owners failing to comply with basic safety.
The Water Police estimated 70 per cent of boat owners in Portland waters on Sunday were not up to standard. Leading Senior Constable Jon Anderson said there would have been 150 to 200 boats on the water on Sunday.
“We checked 52 boats, and issued 27 infringement notices and gave several warnings,” he said.
