THE days of a Sharp Airlines maintenance base in Portland look to be finished after several engineers were shown the door earlier this year.
Sharp Airlines managing director Malcolm Sharp has confirmed his engineers faced an ultimatum in February, following a review of business costs.
The ultimatum was move to Launceston to continue working for Sharp Airlines or to start looking for work elsewhere.
Former chief engineer of Sharp Airlines’ Portland base, Jeff Wyckelsma, was made redundant 18 months ago, despite building the maintenance facility from the ground up, and said his redundancy was only the beginning. He believes all of Sharp’s Portland services may soon be stopped.
