MEMBERS of the Victorian Water Police and the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard held a huge search for a missing kayaker off the Portland coast Monday, only to find him fishing in the dark without any safety gear.
Water Police acting senior sergeant Andrew Lilly said at 6.30am Monday a man had set off alone to spend time fishing and was on board a 16 foot long Hobie kayak.
His wife then reported her concerns to the Portland Police in the evening after he still hadn’t returned, but told police it wasn’t unusual for her husband to spend 10 hours of the day out fishing.
“At five past eight Water Police received a call,” acting senior sergeant Lilly said.
