PEOPLE in Glenelg Shire are significantly heavier that most Victorians, an escalating problem that has spurred health professionals and the wider community into action.
Recent statistics show 59 per cent of Glenelg Shire residents are overweight or obese – that’s more than ten points above the state average. Worse still, without action the long-term future is bleak: According to health professionals an alarming number of local children are overweight and are likely to carry those excess kilos well into their adult lives.
Those depressing stats have led to a major new community campaign kicking off in Portland on July 17.
