A SPECIAL Ceremony was held at the Konongwootong Reservoir, near Coleraine, on Tuesday to open the site’s commemorative Quiet Place.
Developed in a partnership between Wannon Water and the Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Corporation, the Quiet Place will be used to acknowledge the areas indigenous cultural values and history.
The reservoir is the site of the ‘Fighting Waterholes Massacre’, an estimated 41 Konongwootong Gunditji people were killed in April 1840 by white settlers seeking retribution for the theft of a flock of sheep.
