WORK on a new $8 million fire station in Portland could start later this year if the Country Fire Authority is successful in its bid for a planning permit.
Under the plans, the existing fire station at Percy St will be demolished and redeveloped with the CFA extending its footprint to include the Scout Hall at Market Court.
The panning permit application was advertised on Friday.
District 4 operations manager Peter Novotny said the new fire station stemmed from the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.
