A HUGE jump in fishing out of Portland in recent years is overwhelming the local volunteer coast guard.
In the past six months the group has attended a boating incident nearly every week – a big jump from one a fortnight in 2013.
Now the new Portland boat ramp has opened and is expected to attract more anglers to the city, and consequently extra pressure is expected for the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Portland Flotilla.
With an ageing vessel and equipment that needs to be regularly upgraded and maintained, flotilla commander Michael Krause said the committed group of volunteers were working hard to keep afloat.
