GLENELG Shire Council on Tuesday night declared itself an unconventional gas field free zone, making it the first shire in Victoria to do so.
It may well be the first local council in Australia to take such definitive action against the prospect of gas companies using hydraulic fracturing in its realm.
A packed public gallery of more than 60 people burst into applause as the motion, moved by Mayor John Northcott, was passed unanimously.
A jubilant Cr Northcott, a sheep farmer from Merino, pumped his arms in the air as Glenelg Shire’s anti-fracking community cheered the council’s declaration that gas miners are not welcome in this shire.
