HAMILTON could soon be facing a shortage of pathologists if new medical staff can’t be recruited in country areas.
Wannon MP Dan Tehan toured the Hamilton pathology laboratory as part of the Know Pathology, Know Healthcare initiative.
He raised concerns about the low number of graduate health professionals making the move to Hamilton and other regional towns and questioned whether an increase in graduates would help.
“One of my frustrations is that we don’t seem to be getting enough people through medical training in Australia so that we have the supply to get people … out in the country areas,” he said.
“I think what we’ve got to do is make sure that we’re getting the graduate – pathology and in other areas – through our universities so that we’ve got more supply to make sure that we get services in country areas.”
