Established in 1869 as the Casterton News, the paper later moved to Portland as the Western Advertiser. In 1982, the Spectator-Observer Group bought it out to again serve Casterton and in 1989 the name reverted back to the Casterton News.A picturesque rural town located mid-way between Hamilton and Mount Gambier (S.A.), Casterton nestles in pretty valleys among undulating farmland. The Casterton News is the local weekly newspaper, published on Wednesdays.At the heart of “Australia Felix” – the rich, fertile western grazing districts reported by explorer Thomas Mitchell in 1836. The first large sheep stations were established here, notably by the Henty family, pioneering pastoralists and merchants. The town is now a stock marketing centre.Casterton relies on the loyal support of the pastoral community. It is in the heart of sheep and beef country.As a legacy of its heyday, Casterton has excellent facilities in education, health and for servicing agriculture in the region. As a result, The Casterton News has a strong following for a town of this size. The News really is the lifeblood of the community.
