Look at heating, cooling council assets
NATURAL gas, geothermal, biomass and solar energy are all being considered as energy options for the Portland civic precinct.
The precinct includes the Fawthrop Centre, the Portland Leisure and Aquatic Centre, the Glenelg Shire Council offices, the Portland Civic Hall, the library, the State Emergency Service building and the Portland Arts Centre.
Natural gas is used to heat the precinct buildings in a closed loop system since the previous geothermal system using the Henty Park geothermal bore was decommissioned by Wannon Water in 2006.
In March last year, the council put on hold its push to reinstate the geothermal system after inspecting the biomass system using woodchips to heat the Mount Gambier swimming pool.
