Rowers hoping coaching edge will bring development
PORTLAND’S junior surf boating rowing team returns to action tomorrow, tackling a surf life saving carnival in Fairhaven.
Portland’s junior team – led into the water by coach and sweep Andy Murrell, Zane Barker, Oliver Marshall, Sam Hampshire and Jack Hernan will compete fresh from positive results at a carnival in Anglesea.
Portland finished third at its most recent competition, recording one win and four third placings from five starts.
With the team now putting plenty of preparation into the lead up to the Victorian surf boat rowing titles in March, Portland coach Murrell said the team was hoping a freshly formed coaching partnership will pay dividends in the weeks and months to come.
“During our racing at Anglesea over the weekend we were really lucky to connect with former Portland member Alistair McCombe, a rower who has swept for three different Australian title crews,” Murrell said.
