Smelter staff cleaned out by new contract
A NEW company contracted to clean at the Portland Aluminium smelter has been accused by current workers and Australian Workers’ Union members of undercutting employees by up to 40%.
AWU South West organiser Rob Saunders said 12 people are currently employed by All Trades Services (ATS) for cleaning and janitorial services at the smelter, however Quad Services has been awarded the new contract, effective from February 1.
Mr Saunders fears the ATS workers will not be employed by Quad Services, and if they are, it will be at a very much reduced pay rate.
“I know a cleaner spoke with the new company and they were basically told they won’t be picking up any dead wood,” Mr Saunders said.
“Who would want a job working for less than the award?”
