Coasters women go down in grand final
PORTLAND has finished as runners-up of the Country Basketball League’s women’s South West Conference after enduring a grand final defeat at the hands of Geelong.
Facing off at Colac’s Bluewater Leisure Centre on Saturday night the Geelong Supercats defeated Portland 59-47.
In a fast-paced opening quarter Portland got the dream start via Alana Strom, scoring the opening basket of the encounter, with playing coach Cherie Beckingham following it up by shaking her defender and nailing a long range jump shot on the next play.
After spending the majority of the first term locked side-by-side Geelong accelerated in the final two minutes – going on a 7-0 run and leaving Portland trailing 17-10 at the first break.
In the early stages of the second quarter Portland’s Taylah Nelson fired up – scoring twice from close range in quick succession to drag the deficit back to three points.
After a strong start to the second period Portland lagged through the middle stretch, struggling to produce foul calls in tight while consistently giving up free throw opportunities at the other end.
