For the love of table tennis
PORTLAND is a city of sporting enthusiasts where there is no shortage of people who have an undeniable passion for sport, much like table tennis legend Brendan McMahon.
Mr McMahon moved to Portland in 1986 to work at Portland Aluminium and bought his love of table tennis with him, a passion which has been unwavering since his junior years.
“I started playing table tennis as a junior in Ballarat,” Mr McMahon said.
“It took me a few years to get used to the game.
“I grew up in Ballarat and then went to Melbourne for an apprenticeship in 1977 and played some table tennis there.
“When I came down to Portland I played for six or seven years and then the guy who was running it left, so I ended up getting the gig to take charge in about 1993 and I’ve been running the table tennis ever since.”
