Bumper long weekend
PORTLAND businesses have experienced a bumper long weekend, courtesy of a combination of great weather, fishing, a basketball tournament and a dance competition.
Visitors flocked to the city – fishermen lured by the prospects of catching southern bluefin tuna; 35 teams competing across seven divisions at the Portland Basketball Association’s South West Classic tournament; while dancers and their families travelled far and wide for the Follow Your Dreams competition at the Portland Civic Hall.
Portland Bait and Tackle owner John Johnstone said it was a bumper weekend for recreational fishermen.
“There would have been more than 300 vehicles with boat trailers on both days (Saturday and Sunday) – they were parked on the side of the Lee Breakwater Rd and onto the lawns,” Mr Johnstone said.
“The weather conditions on Saturday and Sunday were perfect as well, the wind has come up a bit today, so not too many boats have gone out on the water, I think a few charter vessels have gone out,” he said on Monday.
