Drone warning on whales
AS interest grows around the migration of whales along the coastline, drone operators are again being warned to keep their distance from whales, or risk facing substantial fines.
Aircraft, which include drones, are not permitted to fly within 500 vertical metres or within a 500 metre radius of whales under the Wildlife Marine Mammals Regulations 2009.
Buzzing from drone motors has the potential to cause distress to whales as they spend time on the coastline giving birth and caring for their young.
Breaching the minimum distance can attract a penalty of up to $3171. Offences can be reported to Barwon South West Wildlife Officers via the DELWP Customer Service Centre on 136 186.
