Dartmoor defies history; First finals campaign since 1995
DARTMOOR’S A grade netball side has broken their long-standing finals drought and will take to the court on Sunday in the South West District Netball League finals for the first time in 23 years.
Saturday August 19, 1995, was the last time the Dartmoor A grade team made the top five, losing in the elimination final against Coleraine in a close 37-35 contest.
This Sunday the Giants will come up against Heathmere in the elimination final in Heywood and hope to keep building on an already outstanding achievement.
This year Dartmoor has flown under the radar in the competition, always contesting the top sides but sitting on the fringe of finals contention with Coleraine hot on their heels.
Their place in the finals was not locked in until last week’s win against Branxholme-Wallacedale.
Dartmoor has had some challenges in the netball department, unable to field an A grade side three years ago which proves just how far they have come.
“It’s been great for Dartmoor as a club after not having an A grade side three years ago, we’ve now managed to make finals and have full teams in each grade,” A grade coach Rebecca Vankalken said.
