Bay school officially open
AN estimated 100 people attended the official opening of the $7 million Portland Bay School on Friday.
State Training and Skills Minister and Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney officially opened the new school at Henty St.
The school was previously located adjacent to the Bundarra Primary School but move to its current site to ensure it had permanent facilities that are commensurate with 21st century learning.
The 50 special needs students and 32 staff moved into the new premises on July 17 this year.
Local parliamentarians James Purcell and Roma Britnell, the Australian Labor Party candidate for South West Coast Kylie Gaston, and Glenelg Shire Council chief executive officer Greg Burgoyne and shire Mayor Anita Rank were among the crowd on Friday.
Ms Tierney praised the efforts of school council president Debra Robinson in fighting to secure the new school.
“It was an emotional journey…an occupational health and safety journey for the community in its determination to have this new school built,” Ms Tierney said.
