Heartbreak to drive Meres forward
THE final result of Saturday’s South West District Football League grand final brought heartbreak for Heathmere, with coach Matt Lenehan lamenting the 30-point loss.
While the Meres were courageous in their efforts, they were simply outplayed by a strong and confident Heywood outfit.
In the end it wasn’t to be for the Meres, who end what has been a very successful season in the most disappointing way, losing the one game no one wants to lose.
Lenehan said while the loss hurts, his side proved they were worthy of playing off in a grand final.
“Obviously from where we’ve come from the last two years I’m as proud as punch of the boys, but to not go that one step further we wanted to go is disappointing, but I’m very proud of the boys of the way we’ve gone through the year,” Lenehan said.
“We’ve had our backs against the wall a few times this year and we kept bouncing back so credit to the boys, but it’s disappointing with the loss.”
