Heartbreaking end to catamaran rescue
A 61-YEAR-OLD man has drowned near Portland after he became trapped under a boat that overturned on Wednesday morning.
The man was one of four people on a 5.5 metre catamaran when it capsized off Dutton Way just before midday.
Portland Coastguard media officer Stephen Brown said the volunteer organisation received the ‘Code Red’ alert at 11.57am and dispatched five volunteers and an ambulance officer aboard the CG17 Helen Handbury immediately.
Mr Brown said upon arrival, the Coast Guard found a man standing on top of the capsized vessel, who told them he believed the 61-yearold man was trapped underneath.
He said after the Coast Guard took the man aboard, they tried to right the vessel; however, after several unsuccessful attempts, they were instructed by Water Police to rescue two other men who had tried to swim ashore.
