Morgan, Arthur lead Heywood reserves to back-to-back flags
HEYWOOD’S reserves have created club history, becoming the first Lions football side to win back-to-back premierships, defeating Tyrendarra in the South West District Football League grand final in Dartmoor on Saturday.
Going into the game as red hot favourites, having won three of the four contests between the two sides during the season, Heywood overcame a strong Tyrendarra start to dominate the final three quarters for a 14.12 (96) to 4.3 (27) victory.
Midfield stars Aaron Morgan and Stephen Arthur could barely be split as the two most influential players on the ground, while club stalwart Aaron Barr, playing his 200th club game, was rock solid in defence while also booting two goals.
Leroy Malseed and Cameron Tuckett each finished with three goals for the Lions, with Ollie Rickard picking up two majors.
Angus Clarke, Luke Bennett and Chris Moutray were among the Darras’ best with Sam Wilson booting three goals.
While it was a history making performance by the Lions, coach Jason Saunders said his side was made to work for it by Tyrendarra early.
“It’s the first time Heywood has ever gone back-to-back so we’ve created history and to do it is amazing; we didn’t speak too much about it before the game, but I think it was in the back of people’s minds,” Saunders said.
