Portland’s project of love completed
FIVE Portland people have been presented with keys to a comfortable new local home that has required more determination, patience and passion than usual to build.
Vanessa Edwards, Jessica Moore, Kathleen Blomeley, Bernie Wood and Stephen Selwood were welcomed to Portland’s Lighthouse Home at an official opening with dozens of delighted guests on Friday.
The residents were excited to show people around the tastefully-finished modern property nine years after the first dream was publicly expressed to build the supported accommodation.
The main house has four bedrooms with en suites, including fully accessible shower facilities, a large open-plan kitchen and living area and separate lounge as well as a generous-sized utility room, and a staff sleep-over room combined with an office.
There are undercover outdoor living spaces in the landscaped gardens as well as accessible parking.
An adjoining unit is also a part of the house complex, with generous space for one resident to live independently, however with easy access to the remainder of the property.
Finishing touches were completed by Portland’s Jill Edwards, who was also a key driver of the project.
Mrs Edwards’ daughter Vanessa is aged in her 30s, and will be able to live independently from Mrs Edwards and her husband Peter for the first time.
Mrs Edwards thanked Mr Edwards for his support through the project, which had been exhausting and frustrating at times.
