Smelter advertises for new staff
PORTLAND and district’s largest employer is on the lookout for more staff.
The company is advertising for production operators at the smelter.
However, the smelter isn’t taking on any additional staff.
“Our recruitment drive for production operators is to fill vacancies created by natural attrition, employee numbers (operational and staff) remain the same at approximately 460 employees,” a spokeswoman said.
Operators would be required to work in the smelting production process.
They would monitor the manufacturing process to ensure it stays within specifications and to make adjustments as required.
On-the-job training would be provided.
Portland Aluminium, which produces about 17 per cent of the nation’s aluminium, employs about 650 staff and contractors.
According to the most recent information released by smelter owner Alcoa, it pays about $60 million annually in wages and $92 million in supply contracts.
