English bolter joins South
SOUTH Portland will receive a huge boost heading into the Portland and District Cricket Association season, with the introduction of an English import to the club.
Swing bowler Ashley Turney, 22, arrived in Portland around two weeks ago and will gear up for South in their first game of the season tomorrow.
Originally from Buckinghamshire, Turney has been playing cricket since the age of 12 and said it’s always been a dream to play in Australia.
“I signed up to an agency back home and they were able to find me a club; Scott (Martin) got in contact with the same agency at his end and here I am,” Turney said.
“Since I was 17, just before I went to university, I decided that after uni I wanted to come out to Australia and play some cricket for a season.
“I’m looking forward to the competition, I’ve always been told that Aussies train hard and play hard; I’ve only been here a week and a half and I like it so far.
“I’ve been trying to break into the minor County cricket in England (through Coventry and North Warwickshire Cricket Club) and I’ve played academy cricket, which is the minor County second team.”
