False alarms highlight weaknesses in alert system
THERE have been five ‘false alarm’ emergency alerts sent to residents in the past week with Emergency Management Victoria (EMV) defending its notifications process after some locals questioned whether the system was performing to proper standards.
The alert system was put in place by EMV in November, 2016, replacing the Fireready app, in order to notify and provide warnings to communities of risk in situations of fire, flood and severe weather situations.
The warning system provides information through a range of channels, with the most popular being internet and mobile phone notifications
Warnings aim to provide people with the best advice and information on what is happening to help community members feel safe.
