Melbourne Cup in Portland on Monday
THE Victorian Racing Club is bringing out the big guns with racing royalty Des Gleeson and Melbourne Cup ambassador Georgia Connolly to visit Portland, as part of the Melbourne Cup tour on Monday.
Mr Gleeson, a former jockey and chief steward of Racing Victoria for 12 years and Ms Connolly who was appointed as the Melbourne Cup Ambassador in 2016, will be in town for a number of events during the Portland leg of the tour.
Chief executive officer of the Victorian Racing Club Neil Wilson said he was looking forward to bringing the Melbourne Cup tour to Portland.
“The Lexus Melbourne Cup holds a special place in many people’s hearts and it is only fitting we take the iconic three-handled cup on a journey to meet the people who share in our love for the great race,” Mr Wilson said.
The Melbourne Cup will visit a number of locations across Portland on Monday including Bupa, Portland District Health, Portland Cable Trams, Portland Bay School and the library.
The public is encouraged to view the cup up close at the Portland Visitor Information Centre from 12noon – 12.45pm or the library from 3.30pm – 4.45pm.
The Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour started its journey half a world away in the UK and Ireland in July.
The cup will have visited 37 destinations across the globe, before it returns to Flemington for the first Tuesday in November.
