Changing our open spaces
A 10-YEAR plan to improve, manage and protect Glenelg Shire’s open spaces is on the drawing board – but the public will have to wait to the New Year to have its say.
Glenelg Shire councillors unanimously voted at the November monthly meeting to release a draft open space strategy for public feedback.
The strategy is an update of the previous one from 2007 and among other things seeks to fix some issues with that plan, such as it being an incomplete audit of recreation and open space facilities, no vision for the council’s role in providing open space and a lack of assessment to recommend higher open space contributions from developers.
Among recommendations in the new strategy are the potential disposal of several Portland reserves – at Pile, Shevill, Horatio and Rossdell Crts, Karinya Cr and Vidic Dr, with funds from the first two directed to further upgrading Mitchell Park in Mitchell Cr.
It also looks at new open space where there is a possible shortfall, such as around West Portland and Wellington Rd/Findlay St, upgrades in Heywood, Narrawong, Heathmere, Tyrendarra and Dartmoor and new facilities at Cape Bridgewater.
