Coasters still the South West’s team to beat
PORTLAND’S hold on the South West Conference women’s division of the Country Basketball League remains unshaken after pulling off an 81-71 victory against Colac on Saturday afternoon.
Clashing at 4pm in Portland, the Coasters wasted no time asserting their dominance – firing with a 9-0 run in the opening two minutes of the encounter.
At quarter time Portland held a 22-13 advantage, with the combined aerial dominance of Taylah Nelson and Alana Strom – pulling down waves of rebounds and producing plenty of second-chance points – the decisive factor.
In the second quarter the Coasters made plenty of changes and the shift in momentum swung in favour of Colac, scoring aggressively to reduce the deficit to a solitary point at the main break.
At half time the Coasters led the Kookas 35-34.
Early in the third Portland’s woes persisted, with the team opting to try and score from mid and long range options rather than scoring in tight.
