Compy’s 97 takes Go-Ports to win over Tigers
A STELLAR innings from Damien Compton took Gorae-Portland over the line for a win against Portland Tigers on Saturday in round six of the Portland and District Cricket Association’s season.
Meeting at Hanlon Park in a two-day encounter, Portland Tigers posted a modest total of 131 in the first innings, before evening the ledger by reducing Go-Ports to 3-21 before stumps.
Opener James Cannon (8 not out) and Damien Compton (6 not out) resumed batting on the second day and survived an early attack from Tigers, seeing off the new ball in the hands of Tigers’ Josh Atwell and Will Oakley.
After working hard in the heat to get settled, Cannon slipped up off the bowling of Tigers’ Paul Procter, dismissed caught and bowled for 18.
With Go-Ports left at 4-57, Compton then rose to the challenge – sprinting and slashing his way to 97 from 183 ball faced.
Compton’s near-century effort featured 14 fours and plenty of hard-running between wickets, but unfortunately came to an end just three runs short of the milestone triple-figure total – caught by Procter off the bowling of Josh Atwell.
