Elijah makes unexpected CBL debut
PROMISING young basketball referee Elijah Roberts ticked off a huge achievement on Saturday when he made his debut at Country Basketball League level.
Roberts, 14, got a late call-up to officiate in Saturday afternoon’s CBL women’s match between Portland and Colac, even though he is technically still two years too young to do so.
The match, hosted by Portland, had the unusual starting time of 4pm at the request of Colac, however an administrative mix up left the match with no referees at the new start time.
The CBL carries a minimum age of 16 years old for referees and a requirement of a level two grading, with Roberts falling short of both requirements – however exceptions are possible with permission from both teams.
Elijah umpired the first half of the match with Hamilton’s Jasmine Overton, a regular CBL referee who just happened to be at Portland to watch the match, and the second half with league veteran Francis Harrison, who had arrived at the stadium for what he believed was a 6pm tip-off.
