Portland and Mount Gambier to meet again
REPRESENTATIVE cricket between Portland and Mount Gambier is set to go ahead for the third consecutive year with an inter-town clash taking place on Sunday December 16.
Representative sides from the Portland and District Cricket Association and the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association will meet at Hanlon Park for a 40-over a side one-day contest.
Recent competition between the two leagues began in 2016, with Mount Gambier given Portland a seven-wicket hosing at Henty Park.
Play continued last year, with Portland heading to Mount Gambier’s Frew Park and enduring a nine-wicket loss despite some heroics from captain Jarrod Holt and young gun Jordi Withers.
In the third iteration of the event Portland will be captained by Tyrendarra batsman Jake Wilson, while Gorae-Portland all-rounder Nick Wills will saddle up as vice captain.
PDCA organiser John Mitchell said that while there are still plenty of details left to iron out, it’s shaping up to be another memorable day between the two leagues.
“We don’t have a lot of details available just yet because we’re waiting to see just who is going to be available come the end of the first half of the season,” Mitchell said.
“The final round before the holiday break begins tomorrow, so we’re hoping that by very early next week we’ll have our 12 players selected and ready to go.
“We’re hoping to put together another competitive group of senior players, particularly because we’ll be using the match as a trial process for the senior group we take to Country Week Cricket in Bendigo in January.”
