Saunders’ devastating shooting secures flag
TIGERSHARKS Gold are the champions of the Portland Basketball Association’s division one men’s competition after crushing Mustangs Wanderers in the grand final on Sunday.
Taking on an under-manned Mustangs, missing the likes of William Barker-Lovett, Troy Lovett, Jordan Atrill, Dane Handreck and the injury-hampered Jamaine Jones, Tigersharks cruised through the match largely unchallenged and recorded a 76-53 result.
In the first half the name of the game was ball movement, with Tigersharks Gold’s whipping the ball across the court in attack at breakneck speed.
As a result, Mustangs’ defence was either spread too wide and lanes were opened up for the likes of Trenton Johnston and Nathan Valori, or alternatively space at the three-point mark was made available to Jed Saunders.
At the other end of the court Leon Davis was on-fire as a playmaker for Mustangs, putting the ball in hands of Stephen Lovett and Brock Carter deep in the key with ease, but due to some tight defence, scoring was a much more difficult task.
