Portland’s Hein claims Australian Championship
IT was a contest that went right down to the final race on Friday, but in the end Portland’s Leigh Hein pushed ahead when it mattered at the Taipan Catamaran
Australian Championships and claimed the 2019 title.
Contested across five days and 12 races and hosted by the Portland Yacht Club, two members of the division one group bolted ahead of the rest in the opening
stages – with Portland’s Hein in hot pursuit of New South Welshman William Richards.
Across 12 races the duo sparred, swapping podium positions back and forth, and heading into the final race on Friday Richards maintained a narrow overall
In the end however Hein simply wouldn’t be stopped, finished in first – his fifth race win of the week – to push ahead with a stronger aggregate score.
“I’ve always got it in my head that you sail a series and not a race,” Hein said.
“I haven’t done a lot of sailing (recently) and certainly felt myself improving as the week went on.”
