Drag meet called off after serious collision
AN accident between two drivers at South Coast Raceway on Saturday forced Wild Bunch Wars event to be called off.
The accident occurred when a car, driven by Melbourne’s Jason Duncan, lost control and veered across the track and into the rear of a stationary car driven by Portland’s Dean Cleary.
After hitting Cleary, Duncan’s car then hit the concrete barrier before running off back towards the start line, taking out the staging area before driving through a fence at the back of the strip.
The car eventually came to a stop after hitting a pine tree behind the fence.
South Coast Drag Racing Association spokesperson Peter Berry said an investigation by the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) was underway.
“Until the investigation is concluded we won’t know exactly what happened, but the general consensus is that the throttle has jammed,” Berry said.
“Dean had just finished his (warm-up) burnout when Jason started to do his and what appears to have happened is the throttle has jammed wide open.”
