Group voices opposition to offshore drilling
PLANS for new offshore gas and oil drilling on south west coast have been strong opposed by a group of concerned community members.
Dozens of people gathered at Nuns’ Beach on Saturday to display resistance to the Victorian Government’s gas exploration tender process.
The protest was organised by community members from local groups including the Portland Knitting Nannas, as well as campaigners from Friends of the Earth.
To reiterate their resistance, the group unveiled a banner, targeting the Premier, reading ‘Hey Dan – Whales Not Gas Rigs’.
Friends of the Earth campaigner Anna Langford said the State Government has made positive steps towards banning fracking, but more could be done.
“Premier Andrews did the right thing by listening to Victorian communities and banning fracking and onshore gas,” Ms Langford said.
