Portland hosting All Junior qualifying meet
ALL eyes will be on the Portland Swimming Club on Sunday when it hosts the Barwon South West District Championships and All Junior Trials at the Portland Leisure and Aquatic Centre.
Swimmers from across the south west region and Mount Gambier will make the trek to Portland for the event, which is classified as a qualifying meet for future state and country meets, as well as the Victorian Country All Juniors event, held in March.
The meet will consist of 18 events including individual, relay and the 400-metres freestyle.
Portland Swimming Club coach Paige Olejniczak said the meet is the club’s biggest event in 11 years.
“We’ve got 196 entries in total, from places like Warrnambool, both Geelong clubs, Colac, Mount Gambier, a couple of swimmers from Casterton, Ballarat and of course Portland; they’re from all over the south west area.
“It will be a huge fundraiser for us, we’re running the barbecue and the raffle and we have to provide a few timekeepers and things likes that.
“Otherwise it will be the biggest swim meet that we’ve held since country champs in 2008, so it’s pretty significant for us.”
