Revved up for a ’57 Chevy
SOME people are obsessed with football, getting tattoos of their beloved club or even naming their children after their favourite player.
Others might be fixated on a TV show, quoting ‘Monty Python’ verbatim or following the daily lives of their favourite Master Chef contestant.
But for Les and Lois Palfreyman, the only thing they care about (outside their family) is the 1957 Chevrolet.
“I don’t have any other car – just the ’57 Chevs,” Les said.
“As a boy, my father was into vintage motorbikes; we never got in trouble with the police because we were always working on the bikes at night.
“However my passion was the 1957 Chevrolet.”
His infatuation with the iconic automobile was ignited at the most unlikely of places.
“When I was 16, I found a plastic toy model – a two-door 1957 Chevrolet sports coupe silver with black roof – at the local tip.
“I said to myself ‘I want that one day’.
“That plastic car is the history of me.
“Sometimes Lois walks past it and says to the toy ‘You’re to blame for all of this!’.”
“Sometimes I say ‘Why didn’t you pick up a mini instead?’,” Lois added with a wry smile.
“They’re not as big!”
From a small plastic toy to the real thing in the shed, Les bought his first Chevrolet 18 years ago.
“My first purchase was a four-door 1957 Chevrolet, which I did up and painted white.
“From there I have purchased another three cars, including my dream car, the two-door sports coupe.
“It was originally orange when I got it, so I had it restored to its original silver finish.
“The only difference is I can drive this one.”
