Search ends in arrest; 23-year-old to face court
A TWO-DAY hunt for a man believed to be linked to crimes in Terang and Heywood ended in Portland yesterday.
A 23-year-old local man was arrested at a Pile Crt residence at 10am in connection to an aggravated burglary at a supermarket on High Street, Terang, on Tuesday, as well as fuel theft in Heywood on Wednesday.
Dozens of armed detectives from Warrnambool, Hamilton and Portland, as well as the dog squad and a police helicopter, extensively searched the neighbourhood between Otway, Garden, Browning and Hurd streets, after officers followed the man into the area on Wednesday afternoon.
A Victoria police spokesman said the man was not armed and residents were safe at all times.
“There was no risk to any members of the public at any time,” the spokesman said.
A Glenelg Shire Council spokeswoman said Kalbarri Kindergarten was requested to lock down for the safety of the children as a precaution only.
“There were no direct threats or concerns for the children or staff,” the spokeswoman said.
“Glenelg Shire was notified for assistance and a police presence remained at the kindergarten as a precaution.”
The council spokeswoman thanked Victoria Police for their assistance during search.
Members of the Portland police escorted concerned families to nearby homes.
