Players nominate Egan, Jackson as Tigers leaders
PORTLAND has announced its leadership group for the 2019 Hampden Football League season with a seven-person group ready to lead the Tigers to glory.
Portland’s captaincy will be split between veteran Rhys Egan and emerging star Daniel Jackson, sharing the role of co-captain.
Egan brings years of experience as a long-serving captain of the yellow-and-black, while Jackson is the face of the emerging group of younger senior footballers ready to lead the club in the future.
Egan and Jackson were voted as co-captains by the playing group.
Joining the duo will be Daniel Sturzaker, acting as vice captain.
Rounding out the leadership group is Dylan Barr, Pat Pekin, Daniel Falcone and Ben Malcolm.
Portland coach Tom Sharp said when the results of the player vote were tallied, he was thrilled to see who rose to the top.
“Rhys Egan has obviously been a standout leader at the club for a very long time,” Sharp said.
“In a leadership role, he’s been guiding the club for a lot longer than I’ve been here and everyone knows he’s a big role model for the younger guys around the club.
“The leadership group was all voted for by the players, everyone had a vote for the roles of captain, vice captain and a general leadership group.
“We wanted to know who the playing group respected as leaders and the two boys were both clear standouts.
“Jacko’s (Daniel Jackson) still a young fella but he was a captain last year when we trialled the three captain rotation system.
“That didn’t work as well as we would’ve hoped but Jacko stood up so much in spite of that and everyone has a lot of respect for him.
“Our sole vice captain is Daniel Sturzaker and he’s back at the club this year after many years away from the club.
“Since he arrived two months ago he’s been so vocal out on the track, instantly stepping in to mentor younger players and already he’s seen as a leader within the club.
“The other four blokes – they’ve all got really different personality types.
“Because of that they’re all going to bring something different to the team and I’m looking forward to seeing the influence they bring.”
