Abalone farm approved, but battle to continue
GLENELG Shire councillors have approved Yumbah Aquaculture’s proposed abalone farm at Dutton Way, but it looks like the fate of the project will be decided elsewhere.
Nearly 200 people were present at a special council meeting at the Civic Hall in Portland on Tuesday night which was held to decide whether to grant the $60 million Yumbah Nyamat operation a planning permit.
After listening to six submitters speak for and against the project, and having reviewed 363 written submissions, councillors voted 5-1 in favour of granting the permit.
Mayor Anita Rank and councillors Chrissy Hawker, Geoff White, Robert Halliday and Karen Stephens voted for the permit, with Gilbert Wilson against. Cr Alistair McDonald declared a conflict of interest and did not vote.
Their approval came with 52 conditions, which cover areas such as access and traffic, dealing with issues during construction, noise, odour and dust suppression, native vegetation offsets, landscaping, and road, sewerage and decommissioning and rehabilitation management plans.
