Cash for netball courts! $500,000 courts, lights development at Alexandra Park
TWO new netball courts with first-class lighting will be built at Portland’s Alexandra Park thanks to a Federal Government grant of $485,000.
Member for Wannon Dan Tehan was at Alexandra Park on Thursday night to meet with Westerns Football Netball Club members and announce the grant, which will see the courts relocated under the Alexandra Park Master Plan The new courts will allow the club to host finals because the existing courts are not up to standard for such events.
Westerns Football Netball Club president Adam Hawke said the announcement was a massive windfall for the whole club.
“For our club, especially the netballers, this announcement is great; the opportunities are endless,” Mr Hawke said.
“For the girls to be able to play on good quality courts – especially not having to worry about the run-off – and to be able to play finals at home is a real thrill.”
Mr Hawke said the club, which includes more than 70 netballers, currently train in trying condition.
“The lighting is very basic, with power cords running along the grass.
“So to get proper lighting where they can train safely is just unbelievable.
“They’ve been so successful with the facilities there, which is phenomenal.”
