Fonterra’s closure of Dennington plant a “bitter pill to swallow”
FONTERRA has made the decision to close its 100-year-old processing plant in Dennington, ceasing operations in November.
The closure will affect 98 Dennington employees; however, a company spokeswoman said no milk suppliers in the Glenelg Shire will be affected.
“Of the small handful of suppliers in the Glenelg Shire, all of their milk goes to Cobden,” the spokeswoman said.
Bruce Knowles, a Tyrendarra-based Fonterra supplier and the president of the Wannon division of the United Dairyfarmers of Victoria, said overall the decision is demoralising.
“It’s a devastating announcement, but it’s a reflection of the dairy industry,” Mr Knowles said.
