‘It was like one big family’
INCITEC Pivot’s fertiliser manufacturing plant has been part of the Portland furniture for more than 50 years, but all that came to an end last week when the company shut down the business, deciding to consolidate its Victorian manufacturing operations in Geelong.
While the decision, made in April, was not unexpected (and the company will still have a presence here with a distribution centre) it still came as a blow, not just to the 30 or so staff that were working at the plant at the time of its closure, but also the many hundreds who have been employed there in the past.
Those staff came from a variety of backgrounds and did a variety of jobs, some going on to bigger and better things.
Some of them sat down with the Observer to reflect on a place that became a large part of their lives.
