Promotion for dedicated Coast Guard volunteer
PORTLAND’S Stephen Brown has been elected as Squadron Commodore of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard division, West Victoria, which will be formally established from July 1.
The promotion is a tribute to the dedication and leadership of Mr Brown, who joined the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard’s Portland flotilla shortly after it was launched in 2004, and has served in many executive roles, including commanding it for six years.
During that time the Portland flotilla’s marine search and rescue service callouts have multiplied from an average of 12 jobs a year in 2004 to 40 annually.
As the organisation’s title alludes, all flotilla members are volunteers, and Mr Brown will also be continuing in his volunteer role when he takes on the new position.
The West Victoria squadron was created after the national organisation approved the proposal. It means six flotillas will now operate under the command of the West Victorian region from July 1.
